Van schoolgebouw tot prettige woonomgeving

De voormalige ambachtsschool De Meester, aan de Verspronckweg in Haarlem stond al jaren leeg. INBO ontwierp samen met COD de transformatie van ambachtsschool naar woongebouw. Het gebouw uit 1922 is met zijn indrukwekkende omvang een landmark in de stad.

De prachtige details, die de historie van deze school laten zien, komen overal terug in het gebouw. We behielden de hoogte, de glas in lood ramen en brede gangen. We herstelden de oorspronkelijke detaillering, zoals het tegelwerk en de gewelfde plafonds.

De hoge ruimtes en klaslokalen lenen zich goed voor ruime appartementen. Elke woning heeft een eigen balkon of een aansluiting naar een tuintje, dat we met veel zorg voor het monument aanbrachten aan de bestaande gevel.

‘We plaatsten de keukens en badkamers in het midden van de woningen. Zo houd je het ruimtegevoel van de klaslokalen vast.’

Nieuw verwijst naar oud

Twee nieuwe woongebouwen zomen het terrein af. Het stoere uiterlijk van de school vormde hiervoor de inspiratie. De fris-gele bakstenen gevel van de nieuwbouw verwijst naar de originele kleur van de ambachtsschool. De ritmiek van de gevel van de school zet zich voort in de nieuwbouw.

Het hof aan de achterzijde herstelden we in de oorspronkelijke luister. Onder het achterhof ligt de ondergrondse parkeergarage van twee lagen.
