Het grote Maria Montessorigebouw van de faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen is het eerste energieneutrale universiteitsgebouw in Nederland. Voor de Radboud Universiteit maakten we een inspirerende omgeving voor onderzoek, onderwijs en studie.


We ontwierpen het op zo’n manier dat studenten en werknemers het als kleinschalig ervaren.

Om het ontwerp energiezuinig te maken, volgden we het principe ‘gebouw volgt mens’. Alleen waar mensen aanwezig zijn, doet de klimaatinstallatie z’n werk.


Bijzonder is dat de ramen open kunnen: je ruikt dan het bos. Het is alsof je onder een boom zit te studeren. De klimaatinstallatie schakelt vanzelf uit daar waar het raam open staat.


Waar de zichtlijnen naar andere universiteitsgebouwen elkaar kruisen, verbonden we twee bouwdelen bovenlangs met een grand café. Met deze ingreep herstelden we de assen van het oude sterrenbos en de glooiingen in het terrein.


Zo transformeerde de voorheen introverte campus tot een uitnodigend parklandschap voor alle Nijmegenaren. Het zogeheten Maria Montessorigebouw reflecteert een nieuwe fase voor universiteitsgebouwen met een campusgevoel.


En last but not least: het ontwerp is qua duurzaamheid Breeam-NL excellent en energieneutraal.
